The author of that piece struck me as so very whiny, like the terminally incomplete PhD student. I think a fundamental problem the author has is refusing to try to take the students from where they are to the next step for them, rather than focusing on a desired endpoint.
Liberal education, "the great books" (the Western canon), contemporary literary fiction, and some philosophy stuff. An idiosyncratic slice of "the humanities."
